The club’s goaltending at five-on-five came in 11.1 goals worse than the chances faced, 23rd in the league, and almost all of the damage was done by the other man on the depth chart. A .9056 behind a club that was 29th in five-on-five chance share is a good season.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 201 and the technique is the best thing about him — he is square almost without exception, the depth management is disciplined, and he does not travel further out than the shot requires.
The rebound control is good and it is the reason a heavy workload has not turned into a disaster. The glove is solid rather than exceptional and the lateral recovery is fine. He handles the puck as well as any goaltender in this edition and starts breakouts himself, which on a blue line with Oleksiak and Larsson on it is worth real goals.
The Mental Game
He was a seventh-round pick who spent four seasons in the American League and one in the ECHL, and he did not have an NHL job until he was 26.
Fifty-seven starts on a club that was outshot most nights and a .9056 across it. He has not visibly wavered in two seasons of doing that.
The Intangibles
