Simon Benoit
Anaheim Ducks Defense
Undrafted, 6-4, and 13.50 hits per 60 — the 98th percentile — with a better chance share than the veteran he was paired with, in every split of it.

This Season So Far
The 2022-23 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
1 goal and 4 assists in 53 games — 5 points at 14:06 a night, minus-5, on 45 shots and 22 penalty minutes.
48.8 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 709 minutes, the 42nd percentile — the second-best share of any defenceman on this roster. His ice went 25-29 against an expectation of 28.13-29.55, three goals of scoring missing and the goals against landing where the chances said.
He was the better half of his own pairing. With Kevin Shattenkirk the two took 49.4 per cent across 748 attempts; Shattenkirk away from him was 45.5, and Benoit away from Shattenkirk was 48.0. That is a third-pair defenceman in his first real season outplaying an 816-game veteran, and it is the only reason this page is worth reading.
The Finesse Game
There is almost none. 0.42 even-strength points per 60 is the 3rd percentile among defencemen and 45 attempts at a median of 51 feet, 69 per cent of them from beyond 40 and 5 per cent from inside 20, produced one goal.
The shot itself is heavy — 97.2 mph, the 74th percentile — and it arrives from a place where heaviness does not matter. He took 0:01 a night of power play. Nothing about the offensive half of this is going to change.
The Physical Game
6-4 and 210, and 13.50 hits per 60 is the 98th percentile among the league defencemen. Only a handful of men at the position finish more checks, and none of them play fourteen minutes to do it.
The complication is what comes with it: 3.13 blocks per 60 is the 14th percentile. He plays the man rather than the puck, and a defenceman who commits to the body and misses has taken himself out of the play.
3.7 bursts above 20 mph per 60 is the 93rd percentile at a top speed of 22.2, the 65th. He is not fast but he closes quickly, which for a 6-4 defender is the more useful of the two.
The Intangibles
He was not drafted, signed out of the QMJHL as a free agent, and has 59 NHL games.
He is 24, on a club that has just sold both of its established defencemen and has room on the roster it did not have a year ago. He is not a top-four defenceman and nothing here suggests he will be, but a 6-4 undrafted left shot who hits at the 98th percentile and out-shares the veteran beside him is a genuinely useful thing to have found for nothing.
What kind of player
The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.
- a strengthread out of the prose, and claimed
Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe numbers rank him 29 points above where the report does. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason. Why the numbers land there sets out the club he did it on, the minutes he played and the men he played them with.
Both bars are percentiles among the 649 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 53 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

A top speed is a season's best, and a man who takes more shifts gets more tries at one; the percentile is the feed's own, against every skater, and says less between a top-pair defenceman and a fourth-line wing than it does between two men in the same job. The counts are shown per game for the same reason.

Why the numbers land there
Five-on-five, 2021-22
- The club
- ANA took 48.0% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 48.8% — 0.8 above the club he did it on.
- The role
- Third pair, 709 minutes at five-on-five — 33rd percentile in ice time.
With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kevin Shattenkirk | 49.4% | 48.0% | 45.5% |
| Trevor Zegras | 50.8% | 47.9% | 52.4% |
| Sonny Milano | 46.7% | 49.5% | 54.6% |
49.4% together, 48.0% for him apart and 45.5% for Shattenkirk apart. Shattenkirk was worse away from him while his own share held — the pairing was doing more for Shattenkirk than for him.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
