53.7 per cent at five-on-five, the 84th percentile, with on-ice goals of 36-31 against an expected 52.4-45.1 — 16 goals that did not arrive at one end. 10.9 per cent shooting on that volume is well below his career rate.
The Finesse Game
A heavy release and a willingness to use it from anywhere — 239 shots is a top-twenty volume in the league and a third of them come from inside 20 feet.
27 assists is functional. He is a shooter who protects the puck well below the goal line and does not create for other people; the value is in generating volume and being difficult to remove from the offensive zone.
The Physical Game
6-1 and 220, and among the strongest wingers in the league on a puck. He wins the wall against defencemen, forechecks with real weight, and is very difficult to knock off possession.
58 penalty minutes over 80 games is a moderate rate for the style. The durability has been excellent — four consecutive seasons above 76 games.
The Intangibles
A first-round pick, a 40-goal season in San Jose, and a large contract here that has produced 26, 28 and 26 goals.
At 29 the projection is 30 goals rather than 40. The 16-goal shortfall against expectation says last season was closer to the former than the totals suggest.
