The Finesse Game
The passing is the best on the roster and among the best in the league. He holds the puck on the wall longer than his size should permit, waits for the defender to commit, and puts it through the space he leaves — 67 assists on a club that scored 233 goals is a remarkable total.
The hands work in traffic at full speed and the release is quick without being heavy. 32 per cent of his attempts come from inside 20 feet. He is a distributor first and it is not close.
The Physical Game
5-10 and 175, and light. He does not forecheck with weight, does not win pucks on the wall by force, and gives up possession rather than absorbing a hit.
18 penalty minutes over 81 games. The durability has been excellent — five consecutive seasons above 76 games at this size, which is a genuine achievement.
The Intangibles
A sixth-round pick out of Sweden who has become an 88-point winger, on a contract signed before anybody realised what he was.
At 27 the projection is 85 points beside a healthy Jack Hughes and 65 without one. He carried the offence for the third of the season Hughes missed, which is the most useful thing this chapter records.
