Ask the book

2025-26 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2025-26 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

1st in the league in finishing by 8 goals, 26th in goaltending, and a fourteenth consecutive season without playoff hockey — the two numbers explain each other.

Who this names 8 of 23 on the roster · 42% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Jacob Bryson, Justin Danforth, Josh Doan, Jordan Greenway, Michael Kesselring, Tyson Kozak, Peyton Krebs, Alex Lyon, Beck Malenstyn, Ryan McLeod, Josh Norris, Jack Quinn, Mattias Samuelsson, Conor Timmins, Jason Zucker.

What the Quant Says

79 points, and a fourteenth consecutive season without playoff hockey — the longest active drought in the four major leagues.

What makes this one different from the thirteen before it is that the club was not badly outplayed: 15th in shot-attempt share, 20th in creating chances, 24th at preventing them. Mediocre, not dreadful. What sank it was the crease, and what disguised how mediocre it was, was the shooting: 1st in the league in finishing by 8 goals over 2nd, and 26th in goaltending. Both of those numbers move toward the middle next season, and they move in opposite directions.

There are genuine assets here — Dahlin at 25 and the only man on the roster who tilts a rink, Byram finally healthy, Benson and Kulich at 20 and 21 with the best underlying numbers of any forwards on the team. There is also a goaltender on a five-year contract who stopped .887, and no visible alternative.

What the Scout Says

A club with a genuinely elite defenceman, two enormous shooters, several promising 21-year-olds, and no goaltending at all.

Rasmus Dahlin escapes pressure by changing direction rather than by outrunning it, carries out of his own zone as a matter of course, and joins a rush as a fourth attacker rather than a trailer — and he is more physical than most defencemen with this much skill, which is what separates him from the other elite puck-movers. Tage Thompson releases the puck from a 6-6 frame with an enormous reach, so it leaves from a place goaltenders cannot see at an angle they have not set for.

Around them the roster is full of men who are useful and not decisive. Alex Tuch is 6-4, skates like a much smaller winger, forechecks hard and wins pucks against defencemen. Zach Benson is 5-10 and has decided the only way to play is inside. Owen Power is 6-6 and skates unusually well for it and does not play to the size at all. Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen is 6-5 and covers space rather than reacting, and a puck moved across the slot finds him late.

How they were used

2024-25 · 78 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
