Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Six goaltenders, a crease that finished 28th, and a 6-6 centre who scored 38 goals off the hardest shot in the league from outside the slot.

Who this names 13 of 23 on the roster · 53% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Rasmus Asplund, Anders Bjork, Jacob Bryson, Casey Fitzgerald, Zemgus Girgensons, Vinnie Hinostroza, Henri Jokiharju, Peyton Krebs, Casey Mittelstadt, Kyle Okposo.

What the Quant Says

32-39-11, 75 points, 24th in the league and last in the Atlantic.

232 goals for, 22nd. 290 against, 25th. 26th in chance share at five-on-five at 46.3 per cent, 20th in shot-attempt share at 48.5, 29th at creating chances at even strength and 22nd at suppressing them.

At five-on-five: 158 goals scored against 149.8 expected, and 200 conceded against 173.5. The finishing was 9th in the league at plus-8.2 and the goaltending 28th at minus-26.5. The club shot better than its chances deserved and lost three times as much back in its own net.

Tage Thompson scored 38 goals — he had 38 in his first 145 NHL games — off a shot that leaves his stick at 101.6 mph, the hardest recorded release of any forward in the league. Jeff Skinner scored 33 at thirty, two seasons after scoring 7 in 53. Rasmus Dahlin had 53 points and 24:01 a night at twenty-two.

Six goaltenders dressed here. Craig Anderson played 31 games at forty and posted an .8974; Dustin Tokarski played 29 and has gone to Pittsburgh; Aaron Dell 12 and has gone to San Jose; Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen 9, Malcolm Subban 4 and Michael Houser 2.

Eric Comrie arrives from Winnipeg, Ilya Lyubushkin from Toronto, Riley Sheahan from Seattle and Kale Clague from Montreal. Colin Miller, Robert Hagg, Mark Pysyk and Cody Eakin are gone.

Owen Power, first overall in 2021, arrives for a first full season. This roster has three centres of 24 or under, two first-overall defencemen, and no goaltender.

What the Scout Says

A 6-6 centre with the hardest shot in the league, a first-overall defenceman at twenty-two, another one arriving behind him, and no goaltender.

Tage Thompson scored 38 goals after scoring 38 in his first 145 games. Rasmus Dahlin played 24 minutes a night at twenty-two and covered more ground than anybody in the building. Alex Tuch takes pucks away at the 96th percentile and blocks shots at the 95th.

The forward group is young and the shape of it is clear: Thompson and Cozens down the middle, Skinner and Olofsson to finish, Tuch to do everything else. The blue line is Dahlin, Samuelsson and Power, all of them signed long-term and none of them twenty-five.

What nobody in the organisation can point to is the crease, and this is a club that conceded 290 goals.

How they were used

2021-22 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
