Ask the book

2024-25 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2024-25 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Two first-overall picks on the blue line, sixteenth in shot attempts, sixteen goals of goaltending — and the twenty-ninth power play, which is where the season went.

Who this names 18 of 24 on the roster · 81% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Ryan Johnson, Henri Jokiharju, Peyton Krebs, Devon Levi, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Alex Tuch.

What the Quant Says

84 points, 39-37-6, and twenty-second in the league. Out of the bracket again.

The club took 50.7 per cent of the shot attempts at five-on-five, 16th in the league, and 48.9 per cent of the expected goals, 23rd. It scored 174 goals at five-on-five against an expectation of 167.8 and conceded 159 against 175.4. That is 6.2 goals of finishing, 13th, and 16.4 goals of goaltending, 6th.

Read that again, because it is unusual. This is a club that was helped by both of the things that usually flatter a team, and finished twenty-second anyway. There is no regression waiting to rescue these 84 points; if anything the goaltending was the good news.

The power play was 30th in the league. That is where the season is, and it is on a roster containing a 6-6 centre who scored 47 goals two years ago, a defenceman with 59 points, and a 6-4 winger with 59.

What is here is the age and the pedigree. Rasmus Dahlin is 24 and was first overall in 2018. Owen Power is 21 and was first overall in 2021. They are the only pair of first-overall picks on any roster in this edition who are both defencemen, and both play more than twenty-two minutes a night. Bowen Byram is 23 and was fourth overall. Dylan Cozens is 23 and was seventh. Jack Quinn is 23 and was eighth. Zach Benson is 19 and was thirteenth. Five top-ten picks and eleven first-rounders on one roster.

The summer traded a scorer for a centre and added bottom-six weight. Ryan McLeod came from Edmonton for Matthew Savoie. Jason Zucker signed, and Beck Malenstyn, Sam Lafferty, Nicolas Aube-Kubel and Dennis Gilbert arrived. Jeff Skinner went to Edmonton, Zemgus Girgensons to Tampa Bay, Eric Robinson to Carolina, Eric Comrie to Winnipeg and Kyle Okposo is off the roster.

McLeod is the interesting one: 56.0 per cent of the expected goals in Edmonton, the 91st percentile — the best mark of any player on this roster by a distance, and he is 25 and cost a first-round forward.

This is the best young roster in the league that does not win, and it has been for four years. The number that decides whether that sentence changes is a power play ranked twenty-ninth.

What the Scout Says

Three men at 6-6, two first-overall defencemen, and a nineteen-year-old who is 5-10.

Tage Thompson is 6-6 and 220, Owen Power is 6-6 and 226 and Jordan Greenway is 6-6 and 231 — three skaters at that height on one roster, more than any other club in this edition.

Greenway is the club's hard forward — 291 penalty minutes in 401 games, and he clears space in the corners by being immovable rather than by hitting anybody. Beck Malenstyn was added at 6-3 and 209 and forechecks first. Nicolas Aube-Kubel is 6-0 and 213 with 183 penalty minutes in 282 games.

The blue line is large and young. Mattias Samuelsson is 6-4 and 229 and clears his crease by force. Owen Power is 6-6 and defends with reach. Dennis Gilbert was added at 6-2 and 216 with 88 penalty minutes in 82 career games. Connor Clifton is 6-0 and 196 with 245 penalty minutes in 311 games and is the agitator.

The top of the roster is not physical. Rasmus Dahlin plays 25:25 at 204 pounds and does not punish anybody. JJ Peterka is 189, Zach Benson 5-10 and 177, Jacob Bryson 5-9 and 177.

How they were used

2023-24 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
