Last Season
15 goals and 24 assists in 74 games for 39 points, minus-18 — the worst rating on the club — on 14:52 a night.
46.6 per cent at five-on-five, the 22nd percentile, and on-ice goals of 31-36 against an expected 32-37. The chances were bad and the results matched them, which is a more honest failure than most of this roster produced.
The Finesse Game
The release is real and always has been — he was drafted 8th overall for a shot that gets away quickly from the circle, and it still does. 12.2 per cent shooting on 123 attempts is a fair rate.
The problem is location. Only 19 per cent of his shots came from inside 20 feet, which for a winger of his size is a man taking what the perimeter offers rather than going and getting anything. The playmaking has grown — 24 assists is his best — and the puck skills work at moderate speed and not at NHL speed.
The Physical Game
6-1 and 185, and light. He does not win pucks on the wall, is separated from possession without much difficulty, and does not go to the net front.
18 penalty minutes over 74 games. He is not involved in enough of the traffic to take any.
The Intangibles
An 8th overall pick who had an Achilles injury early, missed most of a development year, and has been climbing back ever since. That is a genuine mitigating circumstance and it is now four seasons old.
At 24, this is the point where a club decides. There is a 25-goal winger in the shot; there is also a fourth season of the same underlying numbers and a minus-18. Buffalo has been patient with him longer than most clubs would be.
