Ask the book

2023-24 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2023-24 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

The highest-scoring club in the league to miss the playoffs, by 20 goals — and the goaltending was 25th, which is the entire gap.

Who this names 5 of 23 on the roster · 31% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Jacob Bryson, Kale Clague, Eric Comrie, Dylan Cozens, Zemgus Girgensons, Jordan Greenway, Henri Jokiharju, Tyson Jost, Peyton Krebs, Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen, Casey Mittelstadt, Kyle Okposo, Victor Olofsson, JJ Peterka, Jack Quinn, Mattias Samuelsson, Jeff Skinner, Alex Tuch.

What the Quant Says

42-33-7, 91 points, 19th in the league and fifth in the Atlantic. Buffalo did not make the playoffs.

296 goals for — 3rd in the league, and the most of any club that missed, by 20. 300 against, 26th.

Eighth at creating chances at even strength and 29th at suppressing them. Twenty-second on the power play and 29th on the penalty kill.

At five-on-five: 197 goals scored against 185.4 expected, and 204 conceded against 187.2. The finishing was 7th at plus-11.6 and the goaltending 25th at minus-16.8. Twelve goals gained by the skaters and seventeen lost in the crease, on a club that missed by a point.

Tage Thompson scored 47 goals. Rasmus Dahlin had 73 points at 23 and covered more ground per game than any skater in the league. Owen Power played 23:48 a night at 20. Six forwards and a defenceman passed 60 points.

Connor Clifton and Erik Johnson arrive. Ilya Lyubushkin and Craig Anderson do not.

This roster is young, it is fast, it scores as well as anybody in hockey, and its two goaltenders have never had a .900 season between them. Everything else on this page is secondary to that.

What the Scout Says

Two first-overall defencemen, a forty-seven-goal centre, and a crease that has not been addressed.

Rasmus Dahlin was first overall in 2018 and had 73 points at 23. Owen Power was first overall in 2021 and played 23:48 a night at 20. Tage Thompson is 6-6 and scored 47 goals on a shot measured at 101.7 mph.

No club in this book has more good young players in the same room. None of them plays goal, and none of them is a defensive defenceman, and the club conceded 300 goals.

How they were used

2022-23 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
