Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

The read

the numbers, and the eye

Last in the league in chance share, in shot-attempt share, on the power play and on the penalty kill — and the three lowest chance shares among the league's qualified defencemen all belong to men who will dress here.

Who this names 11 of 23 on the roster · 58% of their five-on-five minutes details

Both columns above are searched, and a name counts on the same terms the page links it: in full always, by surname only when one man in the edition wears it. Nothing here says who ought to be named — only who was, so the weighting can be seen rather than guessed at.

Not named here: Travis Boyd, Joshua Brown, Michael Carcone, Jakob Chychrun, Lawson Crouse, Christian Fischer, Barrett Hayton, Matias Maccelli, Liam O'Brien, Ivan Prosvetov, Nick Ritchie, Karel Vejmelka.

What the Quant Says

25-50-7, 57 points, 31st in the league and last in the Central.

207 goals for, 32nd. 313 against, 31st. 32nd in shot-attempt share at five-on-five at 44.0 per cent, 32nd in chance share at 42.8, 31st on the power play and 31st on the penalty kill, with 31st at creating chances at even strength and 30th at suppressing them.

Last in the league at four separate things. No other club in this book is last at more than one.

At five-on-five: 157 goals scored against 141.4 expected, and 221 conceded against 189.1. The finishing was 15.6 goals ahead of the chances, 7th in the league — and the goaltending 31.9 goals behind them, 30th. The one thing this club did well was put the puck in the net at a rate its chances did not deserve, and it lost twice that much back in its own crease.

The three lowest chance shares among the 202 defencemen who played 40 games and 500 minutes last season all belong to men on this roster: Dysin Mayo at 38.4 per cent, Patrik Nemeth at 39.2 and J.J. Moser at 40.1. Nemeth arrives from the Rangers, who wanted the contract gone.

Phil Kessel, Anton Stralman, Ilya Lyubushkin, Johan Larsson, Loui Eriksson and Antoine Roussel are all gone. Patrik Nemeth, Zack Kassian, Nick Bjugstad, Josh Brown, Troy Stecher and Laurent Dauphin arrive, and three of those six came because another club needed the cap space.

Clayton Keller had 63 points in 67 games and then broke his femur on 30 March. Nick Schmaltz had 59 in 63. Shayne Gostisbehere had 51 from the blue line. Those three are the reason to read any further, and all three are 24, 26 and 29 on a club that will not be good before 2026.

What the Scout Says

Three genuine NHL forwards, two of the hardest point shots in hockey, and a roster otherwise assembled out of other clubs' cap problems.

Clayton Keller was 7th overall in 2016 and had 63 points in 67 games before a broken femur. Nick Schmaltz had 36 assists in 63. Shayne Gostisbehere had 51 points from the blue line at 5-11.

Everything else is a club taking payment to absorb contracts. Patrik Nemeth came from the Rangers because the Rangers wanted the money back. Zack Kassian came from Edmonton for the same reason. Vladislav Kolyachonok arrived as part of what Florida paid to be rid of Anton Stralman.

A season in a 5,000-seat college rink is the context for all of it, and the only sensible way to read this roster is as a set of assets to be sold rather than a team to be watched.

How they were used

2021-22 · 82 games

Measured from shift charts at five-on-five, not projected. Units are built from the strongest partnership outward and ordered by how much they were used; the percentage is the share of the first player’s five-on-five ice time spent alongside each linemate. A low number means the club never settled on a combination. Players who have gone are marked — either to another club, or off an NHL roster altogether, which covers retirement and an unsigned summer alike.
