Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

Ivan Prosvetov

Arizona Coyotes Goaltender

A 6-5 fourth-round goaltender with six NHL games, an .8581 across them, and a clear run at a backup job nobody else wants.

This Season So Far

The 2022-23 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

3 games, 0-2-1, an .8750 save percentage and a 4.22 goals-against average, on 104 shots faced.

Three games, and 104 shots in them — 35 a night. His career line is a .8581 across six NHL games, which is a number nobody should read as anything at all.

Arizona dressed six goaltenders last season and he played three games of it, behind a rookie who played 52, a man since traded to Dallas who played 26, and two journeymen who have gone.

The Physical Game

6-5 and 195, which is tall and thin for the position, and the size is most of what the scouting has ever been about. He covers a great deal of net standing still and the recovery when he has to move is where the questions are.

There is not enough NHL evidence here to say anything about rebound control, tracking or lateral quickness that would survive a second look.

The Mental Game

Six NHL games spread over three seasons, all of them on a club that was losing heavily when he got them. A goaltender’s first impressions are usually formed in relief of a beating, and his have been formed in nothing else.

The Intangibles

One hundred and fourteenth overall in 2018, a Russian goaltender who came through junior in North America, and three seasons in Tucson since.

He is 23. Karel Vejmelka has the net and there is no established backup behind him, which makes this the season Prosvetov either takes twenty-five starts or stops being a prospect. On a club that will concede three hundred goals again, those starts are available to anybody who wants them.

What kind of player

The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.

Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.
