This Season So Far
The 2022-23 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
4 goals and 11 assists in 43 games — 15 points at 18:42 a night, minus-10, with 1 power-play goal on 40 shots and 16 penalty minutes.
Forty-three games and nearly nineteen minutes of them, in a first North American season at twenty-two. He came straight from the Swiss league to a top-four role because Arizona had nobody.
40.1 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 670 minutes — the third-lowest of the 202 defencemen who played 40 games and 500 minutes, behind Dysin Mayo and Patrik Nemeth, both of whom will also be dressing here this season. His ice went 33-45 against an expectation of 22.96-34.27: ten goals of scoring above what the chances predicted, and eleven more conceded than they did.
38.1 per cent of his even-strength time was spent in the offensive zone, the 1st percentile among defencemen. He did not see the attacking end.
The Finesse Game
11 assists in 43 games from a rookie defenceman is the encouraging half, and 1.14 even-strength points per 60 at the 71st percentile is a real number for a twenty-two-year-old.
The shooting is not. 2.99 shots per 60 is the 10th percentile and the shot leaves at 87.7 mph, the 6th percentile among defencemen. Four goals off 40 attempts at 10 per cent is a conversion rate no defenceman sustains, least of all one who cannot beat a goaltender from distance.
The Physical Game
6-2 and 183, which is thin, and the record says so: 2.39 hits per 60 at the 23rd percentile against 4.11 blocks at the 49th. He is not moved easily so much as he is not in the way.
Top speed 20.9 mph is the 7th percentile among the league’s defencemen, and while a 43-game season gives fewer chances to set a maximum than a full one, it is not a figure that says anything encouraging about the feet.
The Intangibles
Sixtieth overall in 2021, out of Biel in the Swiss league, and in the NHL fifteen months later.
He is 22. Everything on this page is a description of what happens when a second-round rookie is handed nineteen minutes on the worst possession club in the league, and almost none of it is a description of the player. The 11 assists are the signal; the rest is the situation. Arizona will find out something real about him only when there is somebody else to play the hard minutes.
What kind of player
The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.
- measuredcomputed here from the season's own data
- ordinaryraised, and called ordinary
Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.
- hard-minutes· is started in his own end, against the other club's best

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe two rank him within 8 points of one another. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason.
Both bars are percentiles among the 649 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 51 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

A top speed is a season's best, and a man who takes more shifts gets more tries at one; the percentile is the feed's own, against every skater, and says less between a top-pair defenceman and a fourth-line wing than it does between two men in the same job. The counts are shown per game for the same reason.

Why the numbers land there
Five-on-five, 2021-22
- The club
- ARI took 42.8% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 40.1% — 2.7 below the club he did it on.
- The role
- Second pair, 670 minutes at five-on-five — 29th percentile in ice time.
With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Anton Stralman | 39.4% | 41.6% | 45.2% |
| Nick Schmaltz | 50.5% | 36.5% | 46.0% |
| Travis Boyd | 43.4% | 39.1% | 43.2% |
39.4% together, 41.6% for him apart and 45.2% for Stralman apart. Stralman was better away from him while his own share held, which is a mark against him more than for him.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
