This Season So Far
The 2022-23 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
82 games, 8 goals and 17 assists at 22:17 a night, minus-23, fifty-five penalty minutes, 119 shots. Fourth overall in 2011 by New Jersey, eleven seasons, 685 games, 162 points. Eight goals is a career high by four — he had never scored more than four in eleven seasons.
The Finesse Game
The pair file is the report and it is unanimous. Six team-mates appear beside him in the with-and-without record, and every one of them took a better share of the expected goals apart from him than alongside:
Vince Dunn 51.0 apart and 44.8 together. Alexander Wennberg 52.4 and 43.8. Yanni Gourde 53.0 and 44.9. Jordan Eberle 52.4 and 44.9. Jared McCann 51.9 and 49.1. Joonas Donskoi 52.3 and 42.9.
Six names, six declines, and the smallest of them is nearly three points.
46.1 per cent of the expected goals is the 40th-lowest of the 202 defencemen who played forty games — while 50.4 per cent of the attempts is the 57th percentile. The territory was fine and the chances were not, which is the specific shape of a defenceman who lets the wrong shots through.
His ice went 55-85 against an expectation of 52.1-60.9. Twenty-four more goals against than the model asked, on a club whose goaltending rated 31st in the league at minus-36.0 — so a large part of that is the crease and not all of it can be.
Out of 48.8 per cent offensive-zone starts, the 281st-lowest of the 652 skaters who took two hundred end-zone starts — dead level. There is no deployment excuse.
The Physical Game
6.01 hits per 60 is the 75th percentile among defencemen, at 6-3 and 207 pounds across all eighty-two games.
0.26 penalties drawn per 60 against 0.82 taken, and the net at the 13th percentile, with fifty-five penalty minutes.
1.15 giveaways per 60 is the 11th percentile — he does not lose the puck, which makes the chance share stranger rather than better.
The Intangibles
2:32 short-handed a night is the 82nd percentile among defencemen, on a club that spent the 6th-smallest amount of time a man short.
22.8 mph is the 19th-fastest of the 192 defencemen the tracking measures. He is one of the quickest defencemen in the league and one of the least effective, and nothing in this book reconciles those two.
He is 29, a fourth-overall pick, with 685 games and eleven seasons. The speed, the hits, the kill and the durability are four real things — and the pair file is six for six against him.
What kind of player
The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.

Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe report ranks him 40 points above where the numbers do. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason. Why the numbers land there sets out the club he did it on, the minutes he played and the men he played them with.
Both bars are percentiles among the 649 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 63 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

A top speed is a season's best, and a man who takes more shifts gets more tries at one; the percentile is the feed's own, against every skater, and says less between a top-pair defenceman and a fourth-line wing than it does between two men in the same job. The counts are shown per game for the same reason.

With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |

| Vince Dunn | 44.8% | 46.9% | 51.0% |
| Alex Wennberg | 43.8% | 47.1% | 52.4% |
| Yanni Gourde | 44.9% | 46.6% | 53.0% |
44.8% together, 46.9% for him apart and 51.0% for Dunn apart. Dunn was better away from him while his own share held, which is a mark against him more than for him.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
