Columbus Blue Jackets Center #23
Eight hundred and ninety-six games, and fifty-seven per cent of his shots from inside twenty feet.

Last Season
Thirteen goals and 23 assists in 78 games — 36 points, minus-one, at 17:07 a night. Twelve penalty minutes.
The Finesse Game
The hands and the head are intact and the legs are not. Fifty-seven per cent of his unblocked attempts came from inside twenty feet, median 17, which is where a 31-year-old centre with no speed left has to do his shooting.
Thirteen goals from 158 attempts is a modest return from good ice, and it is the finishing rather than the positioning that has slipped. Two hundred and seventy-six goals in 896 games says what he was.
Twenty-three assists is honest second-line work.
The Physical Game
Six foot two, 206, and he takes what comes in front of the net without initiating. Twelve penalty minutes in 78 games.
Two serious hip surgeries are the reason the skating went, and it went early. He is 31 and moves like a man several years older.
The Intangibles
Fifty-one point eight per cent of the expected goals, 70th percentile, in a thousand minutes — perfectly respectable second-line work on a club that was seventh in even-strength expected goals.
Three points in his last ten.
There is a version of this career that ended at 28 when the hips gave out. That it did not is a genuine achievement, and what remains is a useful, smart, slow centre who knows exactly where to stand.
