The Finesse Game
A complete centre in miniature. The passing is the best part — 26 assists in 64 games from a man who spends much of the night in his own end — and the shot selection is sound: 41 per cent of his unblocked attempts from inside twenty feet, median 25, twenty goals.
He is not fast and he does not need to be. The reads are early enough that the puck arrives where he already is.
The Physical Game
Six foot one, 196, and he plays a hard, low-penalty defensive game. Thirty-four penalty minutes. He wins faceoffs, kills penalties on the fifth-ranked unit in the league, and is difficult to take the puck from below the goal line.
The Intangibles
Fifty point three per cent of the expected goals, 56th percentile, with the chances 34.5 to 34.1 and the goals 36-33 — one of the few Panthers whose actual results were not eaten by the goaltending.
He is 24, the twelfth pick in 2020, and 201 points into 359 games with two Stanley Cups already.
On most rosters he is the second-line centre and a familiar name. Behind Barkov and Bennett he is the third one, and the club’s depth down the middle is the reason it has won.
