The Finesse Game
The shot location is still right — 48 per cent of his unblocked attempts came from inside twenty feet, median 21 — and almost nothing went in. Eight goals from 91 attempts.
He had a 35-goal season in Calgary and has not been within twenty of it since. The hands have not gone; the finishing has, and 131 goals in 560 games is now the fairer summary.
The Physical Game
Five foot ten, 183, and he plays a hard, irritating forechecking game that is worth more than his size suggests. Forty-two penalty minutes in 62 games.
The Intangibles
The one encouraging line: 51.4 per cent of the expected goals, 66th percentile, in 737 minutes — a genuinely respectable rate, produced in a bottom-six role on a good team.
The minus-21 attached to it is the sort of thing that happens when a fourth line gets scored on. The chances themselves went his way.
He is 30 and joins the worst offensive team in the league, which will not help the goals and will guarantee more ice. A sixth-round pick with 560 NHL games and one enormous season is a career; the question is whether there is another twenty-goal year left in it.
