The Finesse Game
Modest and entirely secondary. Forty-four goals in 705 career games. He makes the simple first pass and does not attempt anything that could go wrong behind him. Thirty-one points is a career-best and mostly a product of who he plays behind.
He does not carry the puck and does not join the rush.
The Physical Game
Six-three and 218, and this is the file. He hits hard and often, clears the front of his net, and is one of the more genuinely feared defencemen to play against in the corners. The 91 penalty minutes are the cost of playing that way and are mostly the useful kind.
He blocks shots and has paid for it — injuries have cost him significant time across his career.
The Intangibles
A sixth-round pick, the son of a former NHL player, and a defenceman who has made an entire career out of one skill applied properly.
He is thirty-four. The style does not age gracefully, and the plus-42 will be remembered longer than the season in which the body stops allowing it.
