Thatcher Demko
Vancouver Canucks Goaltender
An .8893 in 23 games, two years after a Vezina-finalist season, in a body that has not held together since.

This Season So Far
The 2025-26 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
10-8-3 in 23 games with an .8893, a 2.90 average and 1 shutout, facing 569 shots.
He missed the first two months of the season with a rare knee injury that had almost no precedent in the sport, came back, and was hurt again. Two seasons earlier he went 35-14-2 with a .9180 and was a Vezina finalist.
The Physical Game
6-4 and 192 and, when healthy, among the most technically complete goaltenders in the league. He is square almost without exception, the depth management is disciplined, and the frame takes the top of the net away without him having to move for it.
The rebound control is genuinely good and the glove is excellent. What was missing last season was the lateral push — the injury was to the mechanism that produces it — and a second chance across the crease went in far more often than it used to.
The Mental Game
He carried a bad defensive club to within a game of a Conference Final in 2024 and has spent the two seasons since trying to get back on the ice.
There is nothing on the file to suggest the temperament is a question. Everything on it now is a question about the knee.
The Intangibles
A second-round pick in 2014 out of Boston College and 242 games with a career .9102, all of it here.
He is 29 and the club signed a 30-year-old to a five-year contract in January, which is not what a club does when it expects its starter back.
