The Finesse Game

171 attempts at a median of 16 feet with 59 per cent from inside 20 feet and only 12 per cent from beyond 40 — among the least perimeter shot profiles in this edition. He scores from the paint and nowhere else, and 14 of his 28 goals came on the power play standing in front of the goaltender.

20 assists in 82 games. There is little creation; he is a finisher who needs a line that will find him.

The Physical Game

6-1 and 198 and honest without being heavy. He goes to the front of the net and takes the punishment that comes with a 16-foot median shot, and he does not initiate much beyond that.

18 penalty minutes in 82 games is a low rate. He does not retaliate and he does not go looking for anything after the whistle.

The Intangibles

Fourteenth overall in 2015 and 547 games and 314 points, seven seasons of it in Boston, where he was traded to and from more than once without ever leaving.

He is 29 and Vancouver signed him as a free agent in the summer of 2024 on a seven-year contract. Twenty-eight goals in the first year of it is roughly what the club paid for.
