The Finesse Game

Fifty assists from a defenceman playing the hardest minutes in the league is the number that matters. He breaks the puck out under pressure, he finds the stretch pass, and he does it against every top line on the schedule.

The shot is a point shot and used honestly: 276 unblocked attempts, 78 per cent from beyond forty feet, median 50, ten goals. He gets it through, which is most of the job from there.

The Physical Game

Six foot two, 210, and genuinely hard to play against — 57 penalty minutes, a willingness to finish checks, and he clears his own net front, which a lot of modern puck-movers do not.

The Intangibles

The largest gap in this book, and it needs stating carefully. While he was on the ice at five-on-five the expected goals ran 70.5 to 58.3 in his favour — 54.8 per cent, 86th percentile — and the actual goals went 55 for and 75 against.

That is a shortfall of roughly thirty-two goals in one season, worse than Werenski’s twenty-nine in Columbus. His club under-finished at even strength by twenty-one goals and got seven fewer saves than the chances predicted, and Seider was on the ice for more of it than anyone alive.

Eleven points in his last ten. He is 25, a sixth overall pick, and the plus-fifteen beside his name is somehow still understating him.
