Last Season

Seven goals and 10 assists in 27 games — 17 points, plus-10, at 16:40 a night with two penalty minutes. Fifty-five games missed. His 1,016th career game and his 826th point.

The Finesse Game

The release is still quick and the shot selection is sound: 47 per cent of his unblocked attempts from inside twenty feet, median 21, and seven goals from 57 tries in a quarter of a season.

Three hundred and sixty-seven career goals says what the shot was. Ten assists in 27 games says the playmaking has held up better than the finishing.

The Physical Game

Six foot two, 205, and two penalty minutes in 27 games. There is no physical element and there has not been for years.

The body is the whole story now. A hip resurfacing two seasons ago cost him most of a year and he has not been durable since.

The Intangibles

Three hundred and seventy five-on-five minutes is a thin sample and it reads badly: 46.1 per cent of the expected goals, 19th percentile, and 44.1 per cent of the shot attempts, seventh.

Ten points in his last ten, which is a genuine flourish and the reason nobody is writing him off.

He is 34, the second pick in 2010, and 826 points into a career that was on a very different trajectory before the injuries. On a Dallas club that is deep at centre and expects to play in May, he is now the fourth option and a matter of health rather than ability.
