The Physical Game

Six foot three, 222, and it is the entire proposition. Seventy-five penalty minutes, a genuine willingness to fight, and he clears the front of the net.

The skating went years ago. When he is beaten he stays beaten, and forwards have worked out that changing direction is enough.

The Intangibles

Forty-three point seven per cent of the expected goals — ninth percentile — with the expected goals running 57.2 to 73.9 against across fifteen hundred minutes. That is a sixteen-goal deficit in chances alone, before any luck is applied.

He is 35, in his thirteenth season, and playing the second-most five-on-five minutes on a club trying to make the playoffs. Detroit’s blue line is Seider at the 86th percentile, Edvinsson at the 74th, and then Chiarot at the ninth playing nearly as much as either.
