Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

This Season So Far

The 2022-23 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

73 games, 7 goals and 15 assists at 12:36 a night, minus-16, eighteen penalty minutes, 97 shots. Sixty-seventh overall in 2017 by Carolina — the third round — three seasons, 111 games, 35 points.

The Finesse Game

His shot is 99.7 mph, the 8th-hardest of the 365 forwards the tracking measures. And 21.4 mph is the 20th-slowest of the same 365 — he is the slowest forward on this roster and has one of the ten hardest shots in the league.

Seven goals came out of ninety-seven attempts at 7.2 per cent, the 13th percentile. 6.32 shots per 60 is the 32nd and forty-one per cent from the slot is the 14th. Hard, infrequent, and from a long way out.

1.32 even-strength points per 60 is the 23rd percentile.

49.3 per cent of the expected goals and 52.6 per cent of the attempts — the second-best attempt share of any Seattle forward — out of 56.1 per cent offensive-zone starts, the 149th-highest of the 652 skaters who took two hundred end-zone starts.

The three-point gap between his attempt share and his chance share is the file’s real problem. He held the puck in the right end and nothing dangerous came of it. His ice went 26-33 against an expectation of 29.89-30.76.

The Physical Game

3.59 hits per 60 is the 46th percentile and 1.50 blocks the 41st at 6-3 and 212 pounds. 0.85 penalties drawn per 60 against 0.59 taken, eighteen penalty minutes in seventy-three games.

A 212-pound centre who hits at the league median is not using the size.

The Intangibles

21.4 mph is the 20th-slowest of 365 forwards and 2.3 bursts over twenty miles an hour per 60 is the 12th percentile, against 9.85 miles per 60 at the 66th.

Two of the three skating figures are near the floor of the position and the third is ordinary. For a 24-year-old that is the single most limiting thing in the file.

He is 24 with 111 NHL games and thirty-five points across three seasons. The shot speed is genuinely elite and the attempt share is real. The conversion rate, the chance share and two skating measurements in the bottom eighth of the league are why a third-round pick playing twelve minutes has not moved up.

The eye and the numbers

The two rank him within 3 points of one another. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason.

Both bars are percentiles among the 649 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 61 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

A top speed is a season's best, and a man who takes more shifts gets more tries at one; the percentile is the feed's own, against every skater, and says less between a top-pair defenceman and a fourth-line wing than it does between two men in the same job. The counts are shown per game for the same reason.

50.4% together, 48.8% for him apart and 45.2% for Larsson apart. Larsson was worse away from him while his own share held — the pairing was doing more for Larsson than for him.

Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
