Eighty games, 25 goals and 40 assists for 65 points with 6 on the power play, 16:46 a night and plus-15. He converted 14.53 per cent of 172 shots against a career 13.27 across 2,569.
He took 50.9 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,101 minutes, the 59th percentile, and his ice went 49-38 against an expectation of 47.78-46.03. He was bought out in Nashville and signed here for very little, and 65 points at sixteen minutes a night is the best value on any roster in this chapter.
The Finesse Game
The skating is still there at 33 and it is what he has always been — a centre who beats a defenceman wide on the entry rather than passing to get past him.
Four hundred and sixty-eight career assists in 1,056 games and 40 last season. He holds the puck through the neutral zone and makes the play late, which is why he has never been a possession driver and has always produced points.
One hundred and seventy-two shots at a median of 25 feet with 41 per cent from inside 20 and 341 career goals. The shot is a genuine one and 86 career power-play goals say where most of it comes from.
The Physical Game
He is 5-11 and 211 and thick rather than tall, and he does not play a physical game. Twenty penalty minutes in 80 games is a low rate.
He does not forecheck hard and he does not retrieve. A career minus-77 across 1,056 games on a player with 809 points is a number about the defensive half, and it has followed him through Colorado, Ottawa, Columbus and Nashville.
The Intangibles
Third overall in 2009 out of Haliburton, fifteen seasons, five clubs, a buyout at 32 and a career revived at 33 on a contender.
Dallas signed a 33-year-old who had just been paid to leave and got 65 points. There is not a shrewder piece of business anywhere in this edition.
