The Finesse Game

The best puck-moving defenceman on the club by a distance. He skates out of trouble, carries through the neutral zone, and the outlet is quick and usually right.

The shot is volume rather than threat: 240 unblocked attempts from a median of 48 feet, four per cent from inside twenty, eleven goals. Three hundred and thirty points in 623 career games is a genuine offensive defenceman’s rate.

The Physical Game

Six foot even, 200, and he defends with feet and stick rather than with body. Fifty-four penalty minutes.

He is beaten in front of his own net by size and he does not clear it. The skating covers a great deal of that and not all of it.

The Intangibles

Forty-four point five per cent of the expected goals, 12th percentile, and 45.9 per cent of the shot attempts, 16th, across 1,441 minutes — with the chances 52.5 for and 65.4 against.

That is a thirteen-goal deficit in expected goals in the largest workload on the blue line, and the minus-24 follows from it honestly.

No goals in his last ten. He is 29, and the argument about him is the oldest one in the sport: he creates a great deal and concedes more. Seattle’s goaltending covered sixteen and a half goals more than the chances warranted last season, and without that this number is uglier still.
