The Finesse Game

Almost none. A hundred and forty-nine unblocked attempts from a median of 57 feet, with four per cent from inside twenty and 79 per cent from beyond forty, and seven goals came out of it.

Fifty-nine goals in 1,012 career games. Eighteen assists is a fair year for a defenceman who exists to retrieve the puck and hand it to somebody better.

The Physical Game

Six foot three, 207, and one of the more physically reliable defenders of his generation — he finishes checks, blocks shots, owns his crease, and has played eighty-two games in a season more than once at 33.

Forty-two penalty minutes across a full year of hard minutes is disciplined.

The Intangibles

Forty-four point three per cent of the expected goals, 11th percentile, and 44.8 per cent of the shot attempts, also 11th, across 1,509 minutes — the heaviest workload on the club.

The chances went 54.1 for and 68.1 against. Even in plus-minus is a considerably better result than that deserved, and Seattle’s goaltending is the reason.

Four points in his last ten, two of them goals. He is 33, the fourth pick in 2011, and has spent fifteen seasons being handed the other team’s best line on bad hockey clubs. This is what that costs a player’s numbers, and it has never much bothered him.
