Last Season

Five goals and 22 assists in 60 games — 27 points, minus-12, at 19:16 a night with 50 penalty minutes. His five-on-five work was done in Utah.

The Finesse Game

A puck-mover by trade. Twenty-two assists in 60 games is a good rate and comes from a quick, accurate first pass and a willingness to carry when the outlet is not there.

The shot is a point shot: 137 unblocked attempts from a median of 51 feet, five goals. A hundred and forty-four points in 302 career games is a genuine offensive defenceman’s rate.

The Physical Game

Six foot one, 196, and he defends with position rather than force. Fifty penalty minutes in 60 games is higher than his game suggests.

He is not a net-front presence and can be worked around by heavier forwards.

The Intangibles

Fifty-four point five per cent of the expected goals, 85th percentile, and 54.3 per cent of the shot attempts, 88th, with the chances 50.2 to 42.0 in his favour across 1,040 minutes.

That is a genuinely strong season and, on a Rangers blue line where two of four regulars sit in the bottom sixth, exactly the addition the club needed.

He is 27, a fifty-second overall pick, and has been traded twice by teams who decided the defending was not worth the offence. The numbers last season disagree with both of them.
