He took 53.9 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,256 minutes, the 82nd percentile, and his ice went 78-74 against an expectation of 71.92-61.40.

Six goals of finishing above what the chances were worth and twelve and a half more conceded than they called for — the worst goaltending figure of anybody on the club, behind the best player on it. Forty-two goals is the most of any player 35 or older in this edition, and eleven more than the next man.

The Finesse Game

388 attempts at a median of 22 feet with 43 per cent of them from inside twenty, 271 of those on goal, converted at 15.1 per cent against a career 14.54 across 4,072 shots.

1,004 career assists, and he is the only man in this edition past a thousand. He wins pucks below the goal line and protects them with his back to pressure, and the passing out of that position is still the best part of him. Forty-three per cent of his attempts from inside twenty feet at 37 is a centre who has not moved his office an inch in nineteen years.

823 career penalty minutes in 1,272 games is an ordinary rate for a man who has spent two decades being cross-checked in the slot. He is thickly built through the legs and almost impossible to knock off a puck, which is the physical quality the rest of his game rests on.
