91 points at 37, 10 game-winning goals, and a five-on-five expectation of 56.21 goals for that returned 29.

This Season So Far
The 2025-26 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
33 goals and 58 assists in 80 games — 91 points at 37, at 20:22 a night, with 12 power-play goals and 10 game-winning goals, on 227 shots. Minus-20.
51.4 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, the 66th percentile. And the ice he was on scored 29 goals against an expectation of 56.21 while conceding 42 against 53.25. Twenty-seven goals of scoring did not arrive on the ice of the best centre of his generation, which is not a thing a player can do to himself.
The Finesse Game
227 attempts at a median of 21 feet with 48 per cent of them from inside 20, converting at 14.5 per cent. At 37 he is still shooting from the paint, which is the whole of what has kept the production where it is.
The puck protection below the goal line is the signature and it has not eroded. He holds the puck on the wall with a defenceman on his back until a passing lane appears, and 58 assists is what that produces. There is nobody in this book better at it.
The Physical Game
5-11 and 200 and thick through the legs, which is the reason the wall game works. He is not fast in the modern sense and he never was; he wins pucks by leverage and by being impossible to knock off balance.
31 penalty minutes in 80 games. He takes an enormous amount of stick work in the areas he plays in and he answers almost none of it — the discipline at this stage is total.
The Intangibles
First overall in 2005, 1,352 games, 1,687 points, 625 goals, three Stanley Cups, two Conn Smythes, and a captaincy held for eighteen seasons.
Last season was his twentieth consecutive year at a point a game, which is a record. He is 38, the club has missed the playoffs three years running, and he has given no indication of wanting to be anywhere else.

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe report ranks him 34 points above where the numbers do. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason. Why the numbers land there sets out the club he did it on, the minutes he played and the men he played them with.
Both bars are percentiles among the 637 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 89 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

Why the numbers land there
Five-on-five, 2024-25
- The club
- PIT took 49.0% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 51.4% — 2.4 above the club he did it on.
- The role
- First line, 1,240 minutes at five-on-five — 88th percentile in ice time.
With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rickard Rakell | 52.9% | 47.3% | 46.8% |
| Bryan Rust | 51.8% | 50.4% | 33.3% |
| Erik Karlsson | 52.1% | 50.5% | 45.4% |
52.9% together, 47.3% for him apart and 46.8% for Rakell apart. Both were worse apart, so whatever the two of them had together was doing real work.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
Where he shoots from
