Eighty games, 30 goals and 35 assists for 65 points, 8 on the power play and 3 shorthanded, 17:14 a night and plus-26. He converted 16.48 per cent of 182 shots against a career 16.52 across 890.
He took 56.8 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,022 minutes, the 94th percentile, and his ice went 39-51 against an expectation of 47.20-35.96. Eight goals of scoring missing and fifteen extra against, on the man with the second-best chance share among the club’s forwards. It is not a thing he controls and the plus-26 is where it evens out.
The Finesse Game
He skates as well as any centre of his size in the league. At 6-3 and 217 the stride eats ice and the entries are made at speed rather than by passing, and a defenceman who gives him the outside is beaten.
A career 16.52 per cent across 890 shots is one of the best sustained finishing rates in this edition — 147 goals in 392 games. He shoots from a median of 24 feet with 44 per cent from inside 20 and gets there on his own.
One hundred and sixty-three career assists. The passing is the weaker half and the club does not need it to be otherwise.
The Physical Game
He is 6-3 and 217 and protects the puck below the goal line, but he is not a punishing forward and does not finish checks for their own sake. Twenty-two penalty minutes in 80 games is a low rate.
He kills penalties and has 11 career shorthanded goals in 392 games, which is a rate almost nobody matches. He reads the first pass and jumps the lane, and at that speed the gamble is a two-on-one the other way.
The Intangibles
A second-round pick, 49th overall in 2015 out of Nokia, six seasons, and a career plus-77 across 392 games. He has been the club’s best centre for four years and has never had a hundred-point season or a conversation about one.
He is 28. On a club with nine men between 47 and 80 points he is the one who does the most things well.
