Colorado Avalanche Center #17

An undrafted fourth-liner who scored twenty-one goals, which is not what fourth-liners do.

Last Season

Twenty-one goals and 35 points in all 82 games, plus-18, on twelve and three-quarter minutes a night with no power-play time. Twenty-one goals in twelve minutes a night is a genuinely unusual season.

The Finesse Game

He is not a skilled player and does not need to be. The goals come from the forecheck, the net front and the rebound — 104 shots produced 21 goals, which is a conversion rate that will not repeat and is not entirely luck either, because almost every shot he takes is from close range.

He does not create for linemates and does not carry the puck.

The Physical Game

Six-one and 185, and he plays a hard, honest forechecking game. He finishes checks, kills penalties, and gets to the interior every shift.

The Intangibles

Undrafted, four years of grinding through a bottom six on a bad team, and then a twenty-goal season on a contender. That sequence tends to produce a contract somebody regrets, and it does not diminish what he did.

The realistic expectation is twelve to fifteen goals rather than twenty-one. The role and the effort are real regardless.
