Six foot three, 212, and among the more physical defencemen of the last decade — he hits hard, he clears the front of his net, and he has a long record of finishing checks that end badly for people.

Thirty-one penalty minutes across a full season of twenty-three-minute nights is unusually disciplined given the reputation.

The Intangibles

Fifty point eight per cent of the expected goals, 60th percentile, and 52.4 per cent of the shot attempts, 78th, across 1,497 minutes in Anaheim — with the goals 73-67 in his favour.

That is a good season in a very heavy workload, and it is worth saying plainly because he spent five years in New York being one of the most criticised defencemen in the league.

He is 32, a ninth overall pick, and arrives on a San Jose blue line that had nobody over the fiftieth percentile except a thirty-five-year-old. Whatever he is now, he is an upgrade on what was here.
