56.6 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,421 minutes, the 93rd percentile. His ice went 54-52 against an expectation of 70.18-53.78 — sixteen goals of scoring missing, the largest offensive shortfall on the roster, on a club that finished last in the league in finishing.
The Finesse Game
151 attempts at a median of 48 feet, with 70 per cent from beyond 40 and 7 per cent from inside 20, converting at 3.97 per cent. Forty-nine goals in 665 games; the shot is not the job and never has been.
The first pass is early, short and to the correct side of the ice, and 223 career assists come almost entirely from making the simple play a beat before it becomes hard. He will carry it out under pressure when the pass is not there.
The Physical Game
6-3 and 207. He defends the rush better than almost anybody in the league and he does it without touching people — the gap closes early, the stick arrives before the body would have to, and the puck is taken rather than the man.
Eight penalty minutes in eighty-one games is the whole method rather than an accident. He does not retaliate, he does not take liberties, and he is almost never beaten to the place where a foul is the only option left. He will clear his crease, and he does it by position.
The Intangibles
A hundred and twentieth overall in 2012 — a fourth-round pick — out of Colorado College, and 665 games, 272 points and a career plus-151, all of them here.
He is 30. A fourth-round defenceman who becomes the most disciplined and one of the best defensive players in the league is the sort of outcome a front office builds a decade on, and on a club that lost two top-four defencemen in one summer he is now carrying more than he was.
