The Finesse Game
The offence has never been the point. Fifty-six goals in 784 career games, and 92 unblocked attempts last season from a median of 54 feet with one goal.
What he does with the puck is give it to somebody in a better position, immediately and accurately, under pressure, every time. It is the least visible elite skill in the sport.
The Physical Game
Six foot three, 207, and four penalty minutes in 39 games — a rate that would be remarkable for a fourth-line winger and is close to unbelievable for a defenceman playing twenty-one minutes a night against top lines.
He defends entirely with his stick and his feet. He does not need to hold, hook or cross-check because he is never beaten badly enough to have to.
The Intangibles
Fifty-six per cent of the expected goals, 91st percentile, and 59 per cent of the shot attempts, 98th, in 674 minutes — and this is a Carolina number, so read it against a club at 59.8 per cent.
He is 32, in his eleventh season, a fourth-round pick who has become one of the two or three best defensive defencemen of his generation without ever leading anything a casual reader would notice.
The forty-three games missed are the concern and they are new. This club was the best possession team in the league without him for half a season, which is either a compliment to the system or a warning about how it will be judged.
