Six shots on goal from beyond forty feet in eighty-two games — fewer than McDavid took.

This Season So Far
The 2023-24 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.
Last Season
17 goals and 26 assists in all 82 games — 43 points. Plus-19, 15:59 a night, 132 shots at 12.9 per cent.
Twenty-six points the season before, forty-three in this one, on two more minutes a night.
56.4 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five, the 92nd percentile, with his ice at 56-34 against an expectation of 51.61-39.83 — better than the chances at both ends.
Four seasons, 212 games, 78 points.
The Finesse Game
132 shots at a median of 19 feet, 52 per cent from inside twenty and 7 per cent from beyond forty.
He took six shots on goal from beyond forty feet in eighty-two games. McDavid took nineteen in the same number. Nobody in this chapter and very few in this book take so little of their volume from range.
Inside forty: 120 shots, 17 goals, 14.17 per cent.
21 tip-ins and 6 deflections out of 132 tracked shots — more than a fifth of everything he put on net was a redirection of somebody else’s. This is a player whose entire offensive method is to be in front of the goaltender when the puck arrives.
90.3 mph at the 45th percentile, and it does not matter at all: he does not shoot from anywhere that a hard shot helps.
The Physical Game
6-3 and 191, and 28 penalty minutes in 82 games.
Top speed 21.9 mph, the 33rd percentile; bursts 1.1 a game, the 58th; 2.51 miles a game, the 44th. He is not fast and does not cover unusual ground.
What he does is hold the net-front position against defencemen forty pounds heavier and get a stick on pucks there. At 6-3 and 191 that is a matter of leverage rather than mass, and he wins it more often than the weight suggests.
The Intangibles
Forty-second overall in 2017 to Carolina, eight games there, and then traded to Florida in the Vincent Trocheck deal.
56.9 per cent of his five-on-five shifts started in the attacking zone, the 81st percentile.
He is the cheapest useful player on this roster and the one whose method is most legible: stand in the paint, redirect the puck, kill a penalty. The 92nd-percentile chance share is real and it comes from three linemates as much as from him.
What kind of player
The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.

Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.

The eye and the numbers
HindsightThe numbers rank him 22 points above where the report does. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason. Why the numbers land there sets out the club he did it on, the minutes he played and the men he played them with.
Both bars are percentiles among the 638 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 70 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

A top speed is a season's best, and a man who takes more shifts gets more tries at one; the percentile is the feed's own, against every skater, and says less between a top-pair defenceman and a fourth-line wing than it does between two men in the same job. The counts are shown per game for the same reason.

- FLA took 53.6% of the expected goals as a club. His own share is 56.4% — 2.8 above the club he did it on.
- The role
- Fourth line, 1,046 minutes at five-on-five — 63rd percentile in ice time.
With and without
| Teammate | Together | Him apart | Mate apart |
|---|---|---|---|
| Brandon Montour | 55.8% | 57.0% | 50.9% |
| Marc Staal | 55.8% | 56.9% | 49.9% |
| Gustav Forsling | 54.1% | 57.9% | 50.8% |
55.8% together, 57.0% for him apart and 50.9% for Montour apart. Montour was worse away from him while his own share held — the pairing was doing more for Montour than for him.
Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
