Ask the book

2022-23 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2022-23 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

This Season So Far

The 2022-23 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

77 games between Chicago and Tampa Bay, 25 goals and 19 assists at 16:21 a night, minus-18, thirty-one penalty minutes, 125 shots. Four of the twenty-five came on the power play and one short-handed. Hundred-and-fifty-ninth overall in 2016 by Buffalo — the sixth round — three seasons, 130 games, 68 points.

The Finesse Game

Twenty-five goals from 125 shots is exactly 20.0 per cent — the 12th-highest of the 393 forwards who played forty games.

5.95 shots per 60 is the 25th percentile, so this is the same pattern as the St Louis chapter: a large goal total off a small number of attempts at a rate a career does not support.

2.02 even-strength points per 60 is the 64th percentile and 2.52 takeaways per 60 the 94th — the takeaways are the most durable thing here.

And 46.8 per cent of the expected goals is the 23rd percentile against 51.1 per cent of the attempts at the 62nd, out of 54.7 per cent offensive-zone starts, the 191st-highest of the 652 skaters who took two hundred end-zone starts. A mildly soft chair, a level shot count and a losing chance share — he was on the ice for the shots and not for the dangerous ones.

His ice went 42-56 against an expectation of 39.45-44.86. Two and a half more goals in front than the model asked and eleven more against, and the eleven are where the minus-18 lives.

Most of the season came in Chicago, which finished 29th in attempt share and 27th in the standings, so the shares carry that club rather than this one.

The Physical Game

6-2 and 186 pounds, and thirty-one penalty minutes in seventy-seven games.

3.00 hits per 60 is the 37th percentile and 1.52 blocks the 42nd. 1.14 penalties drawn per 60 is the 82nd percentile against 0.67 taken at the 53rd.

The Intangibles

9.1 bursts over twenty miles an hour per 60 is the 85th percentile among forwards and a 22.6 mph top speed the 60th, against 9.43 miles per 60 at the 31st.

Above twenty miles an hour often, and covering an ordinary amount of ice.

His shot is 91.2 mph, the 57th percentile.

He is 24, a sixth-round pick, with sixty-eight points in 130 games. The sprint count, twenty-five goals at 24 and a career shooting rate that has not yet had time to settle are the case. A 23rd-percentile chance share and a minus-18 are the caution, and the club that acquired him took 52.5 per cent of the chances without him.

The eye and the numbers

The report ranks him 52 points above where the numbers do. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason. Why the numbers land there sets out the club he did it on, the minutes he played and the men he played them with.

Both bars are percentiles among the 649 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 68 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

A top speed is a season's best, and a man who takes more shifts gets more tries at one; the percentile is the feed's own, against every skater, and says less between a top-pair defenceman and a fourth-line wing than it does between two men in the same job. The counts are shown per game for the same reason.

46.0% together, 47.1% for him apart and 47.3% for Kane apart. Splitting them up moved neither man. Whatever is driving the share, it is not this pairing.

Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
