Last Season
Two goals and six points in 41 games, plus-eight, on fourteen and a half minutes a night. He missed half the year, which is the story of the back half of his career.
The Physical Game
Six-three and 231, and it is the whole of his remaining value. He hits hard and often, he clears the front of his own net, and he is willing to fight. On a third pairing with sheltered minutes, that is a genuinely useful thing to have available in a playoff series.
He blocks shots and pays the physical price that comes with all of it, repeatedly.
The Finesse Game
Very little. Sixty-six goals in 970 games, no power-play role for a decade, and a first pass that is safe rather than good. He does not carry the puck and does not join a rush.
The skating has slowed noticeably and he is beaten wide by fast wingers, which is why the minutes are what they are.
The Intangibles
The third pick in 2008 for a franchise that no longer exists in that city, and a career that turned into something entirely different from what was projected — a Cup, several organisations, and a long second act as a physical depth defenceman.
He is thirty-six. This is a role that a club fills from within the moment the games start being missed.
