The Finesse Game

The shot is the best on a team that finished third in the league in finishing, and it is the location as much as the release: 40 per cent of his unblocked attempts came from inside twenty feet, median 24, with only 15 per cent from beyond forty.

He is not fast. He has never been fast. What he has is a first step into a shooting lane that opens for about a third of a second, and hands quick enough to use it — which is why 422 attempts produced 50 goals across all situations.

Fifty-one assists says the passing is genuinely first-line, not a by-product of playing with good people.

The Physical Game

Six foot three, 204, and he wins pucks with reach and body position rather than speed. Thirty-two penalty minutes. He goes to the net front on the power play and stays there.

The skating is the one real limitation and it is the reason he was a thirty-ninth overall pick.

Fifty-five point one per cent of the expected goals, 89th percentile, on a club whose team figure was 50.5 and whose shot-attempt share was 47.5 — meaning he was carrying rather than being carried.

The expected goals ran 59.4 to 48.3 in his favour across 1,251 minutes.

He is 26, 490 points into 456 games, and twelve points in his last ten with seven goals. On a team built to defend, he is the reason it also scores.
