Last Season
20 goals and 34 assists in 76 games — 54 points at 18:17 a night, minus-10, with 4 power-play goals and 5 game-winners on 172 shots, converting at 11.63 per cent, and 24 penalty minutes.
It is the third season of a decline in goals: 37, then 23, then 20. The points held up because the assists did not.
46.2 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 1,120 minutes, the 25th percentile. His ice went 30-51 against an expectation of 40.95-47.74 — eleven goals of scoring missing, the largest offensive shortfall on the roster.
The Finesse Game
172 attempts at a median of 30 feet, with 29 per cent from inside 20 and 15 per cent from beyond 40, converting at 11.63 per cent. He shoots from the middle distance and he is accurate rather than heavy.
The hands and the hockey sense are the reason he is a first-line winger — he holds the puck through the first check and finds a teammate coming late, and 34 assists on a club that scored 204 goals is a real season.
The 37-goal year is now three seasons old and looks more and more like the outlier. Ninety-five goals in 350 career games says the truth is somewhere near twenty.
The Physical Game
6-0 and 193. He does not forecheck with force and he does not win pucks on the wall against a heavy defenceman, and the game is played away from contact by design.
24 penalty minutes in 76 games and 98 in 350 for his career. He does not retaliate and he is not an agitator.
The Intangibles
A hundred and forty-eighth overall in 2015 — a fifth-round pick who became a first-line NHL winger, which is rare enough to be worth stating plainly — and 350 games and 230 points, all of them here.
He is 27, on a club that has been rebuilding for the whole of his career. The question is whether he is a genuine first-line player on a good team or a very good second-line player who has never had one in front of him, and four more years of this roster will not answer it.
