The Finesse Game

The hands and the head are the reasons he has lasted. He is not fast and he is not big, and he has 342 career points anyway, because he sees the play a beat before the man covering him does.

He works the half-wall and the goal line, and his shot is a threat mostly because it forces the goaltender to respect a player who would rather pass. The median attempt came from 28 feet — he is a distance shooter by preference, and the 21 goals reflect a player picking his moments rather than hunting.

The Physical Game

Six foot even and 193 pounds, and it is the weakest part of the report. Fourteen penalty minutes in 61 games. He does not finish checks, does not win many pucks by force, and can be removed from a game by a physical defence pair that is willing to do it every shift.

Twenty-one games missed is also its own fact and it is not the first time.

The Intangibles

A fifth-round pick in 2015, which is a scouting story in itself, and now the veteran the young forwards are learning from. The five-on-five numbers are excellent — 53.6 per cent of the expected goals, 81st percentile, plus-11 in the goals column while the rest of the club drowned.

He is 29 in September and on a team that is not finished rebuilding. That arithmetic tends to resolve itself one way, and it is worth watching where he ends up.
