Chicago Blackhawks Center #86

Minus thirty, six penalty minutes, and eight hundred and twenty-seven games of doing it the same quiet way.

Last Season

Fourteen goals and 21 assists in 75 games — 35 points, minus-30, at 17:45 a night. Six penalty minutes all year.

The Finesse Game

The passing was always the skill and it is still there — 368 career assists against 184 goals, and the good ones are the ones made under pressure to a man he has not looked at.

The shot has never been a weapon and is less of one now: 27 per cent of his unblocked attempts inside twenty feet, 28 per cent from beyond forty, median 32. Fourteen goals.

He needs a linemate who finishes and he did not have one.

The Physical Game

Five foot eleven, 191, and six penalty minutes in 75 games, which is a remarkable number and not a compliment. He is not in any battles. He plays entirely in space and when the space is gone he is a passenger.

The Intangibles

Minus-30 on a club that was worst in the league is not much of an indictment on its own, and the underlying number is worse: 42.1 per cent of the expected goals, fourth percentile.

He is 31, in his thirteenth season, and he won a Stanley Cup here as a teenager before spending eight good years in Carolina — where, as this book’s Carolina section makes plain, every forward posts a fifty-five per cent share. He came back and the numbers inverted.

Some of that is the club. Three points in his last ten says some of it is not.
