The Finesse Game

A volume shooter with a heavy release. Four hundred and twenty-two unblocked attempts — more than anyone here — producing 23 goals from a median of 26 feet with 40 per cent inside twenty.

That is a great deal of shooting from reasonable ice for a modest return, and 241 goals in 698 career games says the finishing is usually better than this.

Twenty assists is a low number and the playmaking has never been the half he sells.

The Physical Game

Six foot one and 220, and he is genuinely heavy — one of the few forwards in this book who is both a top-six scorer and a physical problem. Twenty-two penalty minutes is lower than his game suggests.

He goes to the net front on the power play and wins the ice there.

The Intangibles

Fifty-four point four per cent of the expected goals, 84th percentile, and 54.8 per cent of the shot attempts, 90th. The chances ran 57.9 to 48.5 in his favour and the goals went 36-43 against.

The minus-16 is the second-worst on the club and describes New Jersey rather than him.

Eight points in his last ten. He is 29, paid as a first-line winger, and had a season where everything except the scoreboard said he was one.
