The Finesse Game

The skating is still excellent for a man six foot four and it is the reason he has played nine hundred games. He carries the puck out cleanly and joins the rush without losing the gap behind him.

Twenty-five assists in 52 games is a first-pair rate. The shot is a point shot used as one — 148 unblocked attempts, median 51 feet, seven goals, five of those on the power play.

The Physical Game

Six foot four, 213, and he defends with reach and skating rather than contact. Eighteen penalty minutes in 52 games of top-pair work is a low number and reflects a defenceman who is rarely beaten badly enough to have to foul.

The Intangibles

Fifty-one point one per cent of the expected goals, 64th percentile, and the same in shot attempts, 68th.

Those are perfectly respectable top-four numbers, and after several years in Chicago where they were not, that is the story: the fourth pick in 2013 spent a long stretch being paid as a number one and posting numbers that did not support it. In a properly built structure he looks like what he probably always was — a good, mobile, slightly overpaid second-pair defenceman playing first-pair minutes.
