Ask the book

2023-24 edition Ask a direct question about this edition of the book — who, how many, how common, which group more — and it is answered with a table computed on this page from the edition’s index: the season line, height and age, the on-ice percentiles, the grades and the traits read out of every report. Ask for a view on named players — what a comparison comes down to, what makes a man — and you get the book’s reading of their own pages, and only those. The model turns your question into a query and phrases the result, or reads the pages it is handed; it never originates a figure, and an answer carrying a figure that is on neither the table nor the pages is withheld. It does not forecast, and it says so when a question is outside what the book holds.

Tables are computed on this page from the 2023-24 edition’s index; readings rest on the players’ own pages; the model never counts. Twenty questions an hour.

This Season So Far

The 2023-24 season has not started. The empty row above is his, and both it and this paragraph fill in on their own from the morning after he first plays: what he has done, what it is worth against his own last season, and the run he is on when the two disagree.

Last Season

2 goals and 8 assists in 56 games — 10 points — at 10:17 a night. Plus-10, 43 shots at 4.7 per cent, one game-winner, 25 penalty minutes.

38.8 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five — the 1st percentile, and the lowest share of any St. Louis skater — across 546 minutes.

And his ice finished 23-14. The chance model expected 15.03-23.74.

That is a seventeen-goal swing in his favour on 546 minutes, and it is the single clearest illustration of what St. Louis was last season: a club that finished twenty-seventh in chance share and second in the league in finishing, scoring 180 five-on-five goals against an expectation of 154.1.

He started 41.9 per cent of his shifts in the attacking zone, the 18th percentile.

Nothing in this file should be read as a description of the player. A plus-10 out of a 1st-percentile chance share is a statement about a hundred and fifty-two bounces, not about a fourth-line winger.

The Finesse Game

43 shots at a median of 29 feet. Inside twenty feet: 12 shots on goal and one goal. From twenty to forty: 18 shots and one goal. Beyond forty: 11 shots and none.

Two goals on 43 shots, against a career 12.4 per cent across 105 shots. Neither number means anything: 105 career shots is not a shooting record.

59 tracked attempts, seven of them slap shots and eight tip-ins. 91.5 mph at the 55th percentile.

Thirteen goals in 111 career games. There is no offensive claim here and the club has never made one.

The Physical Game

5-9 and 191 pounds, with 1.60 miles a game at the 1st percentile on ten minutes a night, at a top speed of 22.2 mph at the 46th and 1.0 bursts above twenty a game at the 53rd.

The mileage is ice time; the speed measures are ordinary. There is nothing unusual in the tracking line.

25 penalty minutes in 56 games and 41 in 111 career games — a high rate for ten minutes a night, from a 5-9 winger who plays a great deal bigger than that.

He forechecks into contact and finishes checks on defencemen forty pounds heavier, which is the entire case for a fourth-line winger of his size and the reason he has kept getting called up for six years.

The Intangibles

Eighty-ninth overall in 2014, the third round, six seasons, 111 games, 27 points across Washington, Edmonton and St. Louis.

Born in Cardiff, which makes him the only player in this book born in Britain.

He is twenty-nine and had never played more than 30 NHL games in a season before this one. Fifty-six games at twenty-nine, on a bad club with room in the bottom six, is what a career like this looks like when it finally arrives.

The 1st-percentile chance share is the thing to remember, and the plus-10 is the thing to forget.

What kind of player

The searchable half of the report. The first group is computed from the season's own data; the rest are read out of the prose above, and each one carries the sentence that produced it. A subject the report never raised is simply absent.

  • a strengthread out of the prose, and claimed

Each computed tag also says how well its measure holds up from one season to the next, because a tag describes a season that has finished and a reader will assume it predicts the one coming. Some do and some do not, and the gap is wide: five-on-five workload repeats well, scoring late does not repeat at all.

The eye and the numbers

The report ranks him 35 points above where the numbers do. It was written for a back edition, with the seasons that followed already known. Neither the agreement nor the gap says anything about the eye, and this report is excluded from the club-level comparison for the same reason. Why the numbers land there sets out the club he did it on, the minutes he played and the men he played them with.

Both bars are percentiles among the 638 skaters in this edition with a report and enough ice time. The report bar ranks the mean of the grades above — 63 on their own scale — against every other report's mean. The numbers bar ranks his share of expected goals. A gap is a disagreement about where he belongs, not two scales talking past each other.

A top speed is a season's best, and a man who takes more shifts gets more tries at one; the percentile is the feed's own, against every skater, and says less between a top-pair defenceman and a fourth-line wing than it does between two men in the same job. The counts are shown per game for the same reason.

Expected-goal share while both were on the ice, and for each man in the minutes he played without the other. Apart is the pair subtracted from his own totals. It does not settle who was carrying whom — apart from each other, both were still playing with somebody — but it does say whether the share travelled when the pairing broke up.
