The Finesse Game

Better than the role suggests. Forty-three per cent of his unblocked attempts came from inside twenty feet with a median of 23 — he goes to the net and shoots from there, and a hundred shots produced twelve goals.

Ten assists in 82 games is the honest ceiling on the playmaking. Nobody is asking.

The Physical Game

The reason he is here and he is very good at it. Six foot four, 234 pounds, 140 penalty minutes, and he will fight anyone who needs fighting. He also wins the wall battles that a fourth line has to win to change the ice.

The Intangibles

Read this page beside the enforcer entries in a 1991 edition and the difference is the whole argument. That man took 250 minutes and scored twice. Kastelic took 140 and scored twelve, played all 82 games, and killed penalties. Under a cap, a club cannot carry a player who only fights, so the ones who survived learned to play.

The on-ice rate was 47.2 per cent of the expected goals, 28th percentile — below the line, like almost every Bruin. The goals went 55-34 in his favour against expected goals of 33.5 to 37.4, which is another twenty-goal gift from the man in net.
