Twenty-four games at 21, 6 goals and 8 assists with 1 on the power play, 14:40 a night and plus-10. He converted 11.76 per cent of 51 shots.
He took 59.9 per cent of the expected goals at five-on-five over 316 minutes — the 99th percentile, the highest share of anybody on the club — and his ice went 12-11 against an expectation of 16.78-11.22. Three hundred and sixteen minutes is a small sample and a share that high in it is not an accident.
The Finesse Game
He takes 49 per cent of his attempts from inside 20 feet at a median of 21, which for a 165-pound forward means going where 165 pounds is not welcome. Six goals in 24 games.
The hands are quick in traffic and he does not need space to release. Eight assists in 24 games and a junior record of 100-point seasons say the passing is the equal of the shot.
The skating is very good and it has to be. Everything about a player this size depends on arriving before the defenceman has decided to lean.
The Physical Game
He is 5-8 and 165 pounds and he is moved off the puck by anybody who gets a hand on him. Four penalty minutes in 24 games.
He forechecks aggressively and arrives first anyway, and the compete is the reason a man this size took the highest chance share on a hundred-point club. It is also the reason to worry about eighty-two games of it.
The Intangibles
A second-round pick, 47th overall in 2021 out of Kamloops, who was among the leading scorers in junior hockey and was in the top six of a contender at 21.
He is the smallest forward in this book and he took a share nobody else on his club matched. That is either the best young player Dallas has or a sample of twenty-four games, and the next season decides which.
