Kirby Dach
Montréal Canadiens Center #77
The third pick in his draft, seven years on, with 136 career points and a knee that keeps ending his seasons.

Last Season
Eight goals and 15 points in 37 games, minus-two, on thirteen and a half minutes a night. He has now failed to finish four of the last five seasons.
The Finesse Game
The skill that made him the third pick is still visible in flashes. He is six-four with real hands, he protects the puck well, and he can make a play off the wall that most big centres cannot. When he has been healthy and settled he has looked like a genuine second-line centre.
The problem is that the flashes are all there has been. Forty-seven shots in thirty-seven games, a point every two and a half games, and no sustained stretch since he arrived. Whether that is the injuries or the player is now impossible to separate.
The skating was never quick and has not improved.
The Physical Game
Six-four and 221, and he uses it inconsistently. He can dominate below the goal line when he decides to and disappears for long stretches when he does not.
The knee is the central fact of his career. Two major surgeries by twenty-four is a great deal.
The Intangibles
He was traded here as a reclamation project and the club has been patient beyond what most would be.
At twenty-five he is out of the window where potential is the argument. He needs a healthy eighty-game season to prove anything at all, and he has not had one in this league.
