The Finesse Game

Limited and correctly located. Ninety-three unblocked attempts with 45 per cent from inside twenty feet, median 23, and six goals. A hundred and twenty points in 439 career games.

He goes to the net and does the work there. Eleven assists is the ceiling.

The Physical Game

Six foot two and 216, and the reason he plays. Fifty-five penalty minutes, a willingness to fight, and a forechecking game that is genuinely difficult to handle for a defenceman retrieving a puck.

The Intangibles

Forty-seven point eight per cent of the expected goals, 34th percentile, in 909 minutes on a good club — an ordinary fourth-line number.

He is 29, a third-round pick, and has a Cup ring from a club that valued exactly this. Detroit has now added him and Kolesar’s kind of player to a bottom six that already had Appleton and Rasmussen in it.

That is a lot of roster spent on men who do not score, on a team that under-finished by fourteen goals. The physical game is real. Whether this club needed a third helping of it is the question.
