Last Season

Fifteen goals and 21 assists in 60 games — 36 points, plus-eight, at 13:17 a night with 53 penalty minutes. His seventeenth season and his 1,252nd game.

The Finesse Game

The skating went years ago and he has done what the good ones do: moved closer to the net and stopped pretending. Fifty-one per cent of his unblocked attempts came from inside twenty feet, median 19, and fifteen goals came out of 101 tries — an excellent conversion at 36.

The hands in tight are still there. Twenty-one assists in thirteen minutes a night is honest third-line work.

The Physical Game

Six foot three, 210, and still genuinely difficult. Fifty-three penalty minutes says he has not stopped being willing, and in front of the net he is one of the few forwards on this roster who is hard to move.

He was a two-hundred-foot power forward and he is now a net-front veteran, which is the same job done from a smaller area.

The Intangibles

The five-on-five numbers are among the worst on the club — 46.9 per cent of the expected goals, 26th percentile, and 44.5 per cent of the shot attempts, ninth. Third-line minutes on a team that concedes volume.

Seven points in his last ten. He is 37, the captain, a fifth-round pick in 2007, and eight points short of a thousand.

That milestone will fall in October and it is the last one available to him. Four hundred and fourteen goals in one uniform is the career.
