A 50.4 per cent chance share, and the on-ice goals are the season’s oddity: 28 for against an expected 50.12, and 42 against an expected 49.4. His line scored twenty-two goals fewer than the chances warranted and conceded seven fewer than expected. He personally scored 28 of those 28 — which is to say the men playing beside him scored almost nothing at five-on-five.
The Finesse Game
31 per cent of his shots came from inside 20 feet at a median of 27, and 243 attempts is a genuine volume — third on the club and the most from any centre.
The release is quick off the pass and the hands work in tight without being exceptional. The playmaking is real but conventional: 29 assists at twenty minutes a night is a centre who moves the puck to the right place rather than one who creates something out of nothing.
The Physical Game
6-1 and 225 and strong on a puck below the goal line, which is where a good deal of his offence starts. He wins the wall against most defencemen and takes a cross-check in front without complaint.
16 penalty minutes in 81 games at twenty minutes a night is remarkable discipline for a centre doing this much physical work, and it is consistent across his career.
The Intangibles
A captain in Vancouver at 24, traded at the deadline, and signed here for eight years. He is 30, he has scored twenty goals in eight consecutive full seasons, and he took the most difficult forward assignment on the roster in a year when Mathew Barzal played thirty games.
Seven game-winners on a club that scored 215 goals is the line to carry: the production arrived when it counted, and the men around him did not.
